Setup — Three Seats
Three players sit around the table — no partners, no teams. This is cutthroat Spades. A standard 52-card deck is dealt 17 cards to each player (one card is removed or set aside as a kitty in some house rules).
Internet Spades currently supports 4-player partnership Spades (AI fills empty seats). A dedicated 3-player mode is not yet live.
What is three-player Spades?
Three-player Spades — also known as three-handed Spades, 3-person Spades, or cutthroat Spades — removes the partnership entirely. All three players compete solo: each bids their own number of tricks, plays their own hand, and scores individually. Spades remain trump, you must follow the lead suit when you can, and bags still penalize at five per set.
How 3-player Spades works
- The deal — each of the three players receives a hand of cards. Some house rules deal a dummy fourth hand or remove low cards to balance the three-player dynamic.
- Bidding — all three players declare how many tricks they will win. Nil bids are allowed and pay a bonus if you take zero tricks.
- Play — the player to the dealer's left leads. Follow suit if you can; otherwise play any card, including a Spade to trump in.
- Scoring — making your contract earns 10 points per trick. Missing it costs 10 per trick bid. Every five bags (overtricks) deducts 5 points.
Strategy for three-handed cutthroat
With no partner to absorb your overtricks, bag management is critical in three-player Spades. Bid tight — it is often better to underbid slightly and let the other two fight for tricks than to overbid and get set. Lead your short suits early to draw out trumps, and remember that in cutthroat every trick you take is one fewer for both opponents at once.

How does 3-player Spades scoring work?

Is 3-player Spades the same as cutthroat Spades?
Yes — "cutthroat" is the common nickname for three-player Spades because there are no teams. Every player is on their own, which makes bidding and bag management more punishing than in the 4-player partnership game.
