Spades With Jokers

Play Spades With Jokers and Deuces

Joker variants add two jokers to the deck and change the trump ladder. Compare the three popular rulesets before you sit down.

The short answer

Joker variants add a Big Joker and Little Joker above the Ace of Spades. The three common rulesets are JJA (Jokers only), JJD (2♠ promoted), and JJDD (both 2♦ and 2♠ promoted; 2♦ is pure trump). Bidding, bags, Nil, and scoring are unchanged from Classic.

What jokers change

Joker variants add a Big Joker and a Little Joker to the top of the trump ladder. The Big Joker is always the highest trump, followed by the Little Joker, then the Ace of Spades. Some variants also promote the two of diamonds or remove low cards to keep the deck balanced.

The three common rulesets

  • Joker-Joker-Ace (JJA) — two jokers plus the Ace of Spades top the trump order. See the JJA rules.
  • Joker-Joker-Deuce-Ace (JJD) — the two of diamonds is promoted to a high trump, just below the Little Joker. See the JJD-Ace rules.
  • Joker-Joker-Deuce-Deuce (JJDD) — both the two of diamonds and the two of clubs become trumps, with the two of diamonds treated as pure trump. See the JJDD rules.

How they differ from Classic

In Classic, the Ace of Spades is the highest card. In joker variants, jokers sit above it, so your Ace is no longer unbeatable. Promoted deuces add another surprise at the top of the trump ladder. If you learned on Classic, watch the jokers before you commit your high Spades.

Where to play them

Joker variants are available in AI practice and private rooms through the game-type selector. Not every live matchmaking mode runs every ruleset — check the variant you want when you start. For the full comparison table, see Spades variants.
