The difference is one card: JJDD promotes the 2♦ as well as the 2♠; JJD promotes only the 2♠. That single change shifts the trump count and how the 2♦ is played.

The one-card difference

Both variants add the Big Joker and Little Joker and remove the 2♥ and 2♣. Both promote the 2♠ above the A♠. The difference: JJDD also promotes the 2♦ — placing it above the 2♠ — and treats that 2♦ as pure trump. JJD leaves the 2♦ as an ordinary diamond.

How the 2♦ changes play

  • JJDD: the 2♦ is pure trump — it cannot follow a diamond lead, and it beats the 2♠ and A♠
  • JJD: the 2♦ is a normal diamond — it follows a diamond lead and loses to any trump
  • In both, the 2♠ is a Spade and trump, and outranks the A♠

Which should you play?
